Homecoming!

Monday, September 30th, 2002

The past weekend was my 5 year anniversary for homecoming. There were a lot of us going back from our year. Friday started with almost a 5 hour drive back…the drive normally takes 2.5 hours, but traffic was brutal, even just getting outta the city. When we finally arrived, we did the standard bar visits and ran into a lot of people we hadn’t seen in years. But it was funny that the majority of people we saw there were people that are now living in the same city as us. Do we really have to return to our university town to see the people that live in the same city as us now? One guy i haven’t seen in 3 years actually lives about 2 blocks away from me. Bif Naked was playing a concert at one of the campus bars, so we stayed there and watched the show. She rocks. Pretty kickass show.

Saturday morning was a bit rough to get going. A trip around campus to see what has changed. Sidewalk sale, etc. So much construction! I can’t believe all the new buildings that are going up. New residences to deal with all the new students, new department buildings, new everything. It’s a good time to be in the construction business there. After that, it was off to a warmup keg party prior to the football game. The most of the football game was spent in the beer area. We sat in the bleachers for about 5 minutes and we even got to do the alumni march around the track. And of course, our team won 62-10. Blowout.

Saturday evening started by us showing up a half hour late for our buffet dinner. We showed up to tiny amounts of remaining food and no seats for us to sit at. Oh well, eat what we can, sit where we could. Thanks to the people who got up to give us their seats. After that, off to a keg party. We were the only alumni there. Then off to the other campus bars for the evening. And the night had to end with a trip for some after hours poutine & pizza.

Sunday was a relaxing day. Wandered around campus, did some shopping and drove home. The end.

A special shout out to my 2 biggest (and only?) fans of this website. You Vancouver girls know who you are. To prove that you really check out this site, email me when you read this part.

Sony Minidisc Player

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2002

I got a new toy on the weekend…I bought a minidisc player! It was a really good buy. We went to the Sony outlet store and I bought a refurbished one (Sony MZ-N505) for $100 US. Compare that to the same model for close to $250 Canadian for a new model. I was comparing mp3 players vs. mp3 discmans vs. minidisc players for a while now and i don’t think I would ever buy a mp3 player because of the cost/meg of storage. I can’t fit enough songs on the typical mp3 player. 1 hour of music just won’t do it for me. With the minidisc, i can fit 5 hours of music on a disc that costs $3. Compare that to approx $100 for a memory card to store 1 hour of music. So to get multiple hours of mp3s on a player, I’d have to switch to a harddrive style player like the Nomad Jukebox. 6 Gig of music is nice, but it’s a huge form factor, much bigger than a discman. Even a discman was too big for what i wanted to use it for. I was looking for something i could throw in my pocket and take anywhere. The minidisc players are the perfect size. Nice and small. The only mp3 player I would consider would be Apple’s iPod. I don’t have an Apple to hook it up to, don’t want to install that other software to run it on a PC, and it’s still a bit expensive…but very nice. And the minidisc will be definitely in my pocket when i’m out snowboarding. So lightweight and enough music for the entire day of riding.
